Mariesa Dulak
Associate Tutor
Mariesa Dulak is an experienced mentor with over ten years’ experience in children’s publishing. She has worked with numerous publishers (including Hachette, Walker, DK, Penguin and Usborne Books) and holds and BA in English Literature (Kings College, London) and an MA in Children’s Literature (University of Roehampton). Mariesa has judged for numerous awards including The Alligator’s Mouth Book Award and The Week Junior Book Award.
Mariesa’s rhyming picture books There’s a Tiger on the Train and The Ice Cream Crocodile (illustrated by Rebecca Cobb and published by Faber) have been praised for combining modern and classic themes and won numerous awards including The Week Junior Picture Book of the Year. Her second book The Silver Shadow (illustrated by Alea Marley and published by Walker Books) was nominated for the Carnegie Medal.
Mariesa has a broad range of experience from all sides of the industry (out on sub, marketer, bookseller, debut author, school librarian, reviewer, mentor) and can advise on anything from approaching agents to helping your rhyming text scan. In her tutorials expect to discuss target audience, structure and pacing, page turns, rhythm and sound to help your words sing. And if you are an illustrator too, she’ll be exploring how your text can enhance and strengthen your illustrative work so that you have the whole package.
